Francis L. Hawks papers, 1833-1866.

Papers, 1833-1866, mainly correspondence, but also including some notes on history (especially that of North Carolina) and bibliography, a manuscript, evidently written for children, entitled Conversations on geology, certificates of membership in various historical societies, a commission authorizing him to perform marriages in Mississippi, and other miscellaneous papers. The correspondence includes letters from R.A. Henderson, Joseph Lovell, J. Avery Shepherd, Charles Tomes, and James A. Fox, among others. Many deal with church affairs, Hawks's own clerical duties and interests, and his interest in the affairs of the Episcopal Church. The collection also contains a document dated 1756, describing the laying of the foundation stone of King's College, New York (later Columbia) by Sir Charles Hardy.
